Data Analyst - London

BI Manager

Job Overview:

You will take ownership of data issues, documenting them and tracking them until they are fixed. You will have the support of the BI Team, BA Team, Development team and the business, so nothing is likely to overwhelm you. Carry out daily data quality/reconciliation checks. Carry out an initial data mapping exercise for the data warehouse and then update documentation when changes occur. Carry out data/reporting requests.

Core responsibilities

  1. Data Issues - Help to Identify and Resolve

    You will take ownership of data issues, documenting them and tracking them until they are fixed. You will have the support of the BI Team , BA Team , Development team and the business, so nothing is likely to overwhelm you. In time, you will spot data issue trends before anyone else and share insights and opportunities with the relevant teams as well as liaising with stakeholders. The issues related to data may need to be resolved via a variety of SQL queries along with some UI checks, in other instances you will assign to the relevant teams to fix. Any updates if required are not overly complex, however a sound understanding of SQL queries and an attention to detail is imperative. Checking Exception reports on a daily basis and notifying others to fix the issues. Identify data quality issues, root causes, and apply remediation. Receive and action Data Quality remediation reports, on a daily basis. Creation of data integrity/validation checks such as spotting duplicates , null values, incorrect data types. Maintain a record of original data and corrected data if necessary. Resolve all internal data exceptions in a timely and accurate manner. Review, validate, correct and improve data integrity and accuracy. Perform ongoing checks and take actions to correct data issues/highlight data issues, including liaison with key stakeholders. Continuous focus on detail and data integrity/accuracy. Raises, tracks and re-tests defects and enhancements. Data analysis and debugging code.
     
  2. Data Quality Checks

    Automation of daily data quality and data lineage reports across the data warehouse and underlying databases to be carried out by running SQL Scripts or Reporting tools such as looker or SSRS. Translate business data validation and quality checking rules into technical checks - with the ability to profile data and produce reports and analysis of findings. Working with the business to establish procedures for detection and correction of data-quality issues and collaborate to establish policies, procedures, and internal controls affecting the quality of data. Establishing data-quality metrics and requirements, including defining the values, ranges, and parameters that are acceptable for each data element. Ongoing and detailed evaluation of data quality, the identification of anomalies and discrepancies, and the contribution of expertise to understand the root cause and implement corrective measures. As the data steward you will know how the data is collected, maintained, and interpreted. Implementation of data quality metrics and rules through the creation and maintenance of data quality dashboards or reports. Maintain the standards, knowledge, and processes for maintaining data dictionaries, data quality tools/reporting. Ensure continuous improvement of quality and validity of data received, through implementation of data quality dashboards. Monitor performance of data and identify quality issues and opportunities for remediation and enhancement. Tracking, managing and communicating data quality issues across the business. Work with business to correct data quality errors. Determine root cause for data quality errors and make recommendations for long-term solutions.
     
  3. Data Mapping - Documentation

    The remit will be to conduct and document a data mapping exercise for the data warehouse with a focus on data lineage and data definition. For key fields this may include screenshots from the UI to where it ends in the data warehouse, you will need the help of the development team.
     
  4. Data Requests

    Help the organisation in its day-to-day operations data requests, responding to ad-hoc incoming requests and advising those who ask for our assistance. Master data maintenance (updating lookup tables such as cost centers , account codes , rates, etc). Helping the BI Team if required on ad-hoc business reporting requirements and offering BAU support on other applications/projects. Provide cover if and when other BI team members are absent. After being trained in Looker, you will support the BI team with building dashboards and reports if required. Undertake projects in support of the BI team.
 

Skills & Requirements

Technical Requirements (E = Expected , P = Preferred)

Strong knowledge of T-SQL , Stored Procedures , Views etc. (E)

Strong MS Office Excel and/or Google Sheets experience, including formulas and Pivot Tables , Vlookups. (E) Looker or SSRS or other reporting tool experience (P)
SSIS or other ETL experience (P)
Experience of Microsoft Data Quality Services (P)
Data warehousing experience (P)
Basic understanding of Data Modelling , Star Schema Design or willingness to learn (P)
Understanding of database table design, dependencies and relationships (P)
Source Control (P)
Use of Asana or Jira as a tool to track and manage work items and Confluence as a repository of knowledge - we document as we deliver and learn. (P)

Analysing & Reporting

2-3 years work experience as a Data analyst/ Data Quality Analyst / MI Analyst / BI Developer / ETL Developer
Technical person with advanced T-SQL skills, knowledge of stored procedures and views
Competent user of Excel or Google Sheets , with experience of using formulas and pivot tables
The Data Analyst / Data Quality Analyst will have a technical/commercial mindset and a strong Analytical approach to their work
Data interrogation skills and thoroughness in approach
